BIOS Basics

            Bios basic input output sustem consists of collection of programs embedded in one or more rom chips. This collection of programs is the first thing loaded when the computer is started even before loading of the operating system. As it is the code stored in rom, it is termed as firmware code. the bios runs from the prom, eprom or, flash memory when the computer is powered on, it initializes several motherboard components and peripherals. the size of the bios, and the capacities of the rom, eeptom and other media it may be stored on, has increased over time as new features have been added to the code bios versions now exist with sizes up to 8mb.
